A delegation of 15 Ukrainian rectors/pro-rectors and 2 Polish universities participates in a joint event under the patronage and with the participation of the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Ms Ewa Kopacz, which is held at the European Parliament in Strasbourg (France).
The purpose of this event is to illuminate the main areas of European and Ukrainian interuniversity cooperation to help with the urgent needs caused by the aggression of the Russian Federation; to plan long-term quality cooperation in education and research; to identify current results and commitments, problems and needs, as well as future prospects.
Participants of the event include representatives of the European Parliament and the European Commission, alliances and networks of European universities.
The Ukrainian delegation is represented by participants from Pavlo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University, Kherson State University, National University of "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", Lviv Polytechnic National University, I. I. Mechnikov Odesa National University, National University of Ostroh Academy, Khmelnytskyi National University, Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University, Sumy State University, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Lesya Ukrainka Volyn National University, V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Vasyl' Stus Donetsk National University, Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University, Vinnytsia National Technical University. The Polish delegation is represented by Adam Mickiewicz University (Poznan) and the University of Gdansk.
The members of the event held working meetings with Professor Michel Deneken from the University of Strasbourg, Chairman and president of the EPICUR programme, Professor Bogumiła Kaniewska, rector of the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan.
On 13 March, all participants signed a statement on strategic partnership between European and Ukrainian universities. The European aspirations of Ukrainian higher education institutions have acquired a new dimension as a result of the Russian aggressor war against Ukraine and the two-year Ukrainian struggle for freedom. In February 2024, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union established a new mechanism for Ukraine that will provide a foundation for EU assistance to Ukraine for the period 2024-2027. In this context, Ukrainian HEIs and European University Alliances jointly call on EU institutions and EU member states to prioritise higher education and research when planning Ukraine's reconstruction and modernisation.
