As part of a comprehensive training and field practice on Social and Economic Geography of Ukraine, country study and tourism, the 4th year students of the Nature and Geography Department with Professor Oksana Braslavska and teacher Iryna Kozynska visited the workshop of pottery in the village of Gromy Uman district. The pottery studio is located in the home of Oleksandr Chervonyuk, a potter in the third generation. Every year he presents his crafts (toys, flower pots, pitchers, bowls and other utensils) at various fairs in Ukraine.

The students had an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the history of folk crafts of pottery; the process of making pottery in particular. Uman area is rich in deposits of various kinds of pottery clay (red, white, brown) with specific properties, in particular, a high flexibility, a capacity to produce a hard pot after drying and baking. The clay is used for making utensils and decorative pottery. The craftsman prepares a mixture of clay himself. He gathers the clay at a local clay quarry.

The craftsman shows the students how a simple piece of clay can turn into unique clay pottery which is in demand at the market even today. It takes merely a few minutes. No one could remain indifferent to the magical creations of the master, who offered the students an insight into the boundless world of pottery! According to the myths of different nations, once upon a time the gods created the first humans on a potter's wheel.

The students themselves have tried to work at the potter's wheel and some even have their own jugs and plates. The ability to participate in the ancient art has left the best impressions. Everyone was fascinated with the Potter's wheel!
