VI Uman historical and biography conference “Uman History in Names” was held on the basis of History Department at Pavlo Tychyna USPU. The conference was dedicated to 120th anniversary from birth of Nadiia Surovtseva, a famous regional ethnographer of Uman, writer, historian, woman-legend, whom people called “personification of the Ukrainian spirit”. It was organized by scientific and research laboratory “Historical and Regional Ethnography of Uman” and State Historical and Architectural Preserve “An Old Uman”.

The active part in the conference took lecturers, PhD students, master students and the other students. Moderator of the event was doctor of historical sciences, professor, dean of History Department Tetiana Kuznets. The audience was interested by speeches made by candidate of historical sciences, assistant professor at History of Ukraine Chair Bohdan Chornomaz, PhD student at History of Ukraine Chair Ihor Opatskiy, master student at History Department Oleksandra Kvasnevska.

Students of Ukrainian Philology Department participated in another event, dedicated to jubilee of Nadiia Surovtseva. It was a holiday, initiated by Uman memorial flat-museum of a public person and a writer.

Student Natalia Yudchenko recited a poem by Nadiia Surovtseva “My name is 37”, captivating the audience by her voice and the poem’s intention.

Students of group 22 at Foreign Languages Department and their curator Kateryna Kravchenko visited a memorial flat-museum, which preserved the atmosphere from Nadiia’s Surovtseva times. Owing to the excursion the students got to know about history of Surovtsevs Cossack’s kin, years of studies of Nadiia in Uman female gymnasium, her studies of history in Petersburg, collaboration with Mykhailo Hrushevskiy in Central Council. It was rather interesting to get to know that Nadiia Vitalivna was the first woman from Ukraine, who defended her thesis in the University of Vienna.

A very motivating fact for students of Foreign Languages Department was a story about Nadiia’s speaking 10 foreign languages, her translations from French, German, Polish, translations of rare issues about Pototsky’s kin, Uman, Sofiivka, Uman Reginal Ethnography Museum, etc.

To commemorate the memory of a famous woman, ideas of Nataliia Vitaliivna, students of 11 group (curator – Nataliia Kolomiets) at Pimary Education Department visited Uman memorial flat-museum. N. Surovtseva was an assistant of Mykhailo Hrushevskiy, colleague O. Dovzhenko, V. Vynnychenko and M. Bazhan. According to her memories O. Solzhenitsyn wrote his “Archipelago GULAG”.

She knew a lot of Ukrainian and Foreign public figures of the beginning of XX century. She lived the longest life. She became a chain between them and further generations. She was a bright personality, respected by young and older people. Famous painters and sculptors (O. Kulchyts), architects, restorers and composers (L. Skoryk, M. Skoryk), archeologists and historians (V. Kropotkin, Ya. Daskevych, L. Protsenko, I. Butych), specialists in literature and linguists (E. Hrunina, M. Ostryk, F. Sarana, M. Kotsiubynska), poets and writers (M. Bazhan, Yu. Smolych, V. Hubenko, P. Tychyna), public persons (I. Svitlychniy, N. Svitlychna, V. Nekipelov, L. Padun-Lukianova) and others – those who were in the city during 50-60ies –esteemed it an honour to visit Nadiia Vitalivna.

For communist regime nonconformists the living place of Surovtseva has become a place of pilgrimage. Here was developed an idea of Ukrainian country, though Nadiia Vitaliivna died before its proclamation, but she was one of its founders and supporters during all her life.
