March 29 at 8.30 p.m. people of all over the world turned off their lights for one hour to join the Earth Hour movement of the planet. Earth Hour is a chance to give people the right to vote for the resolution of future of the planet and the possibility to unite the efforts in sustainable development and conservation of the natural environment for the future of our children and grandchildren! Earth Hour is not limited to one unit of time; it is rather simple daily activities like saving light and water, recycling paper, riding a bike and much more!

"Environment and Education" research laboratory at USPU initiated a number of events from 27 to 29 March to celebrate the Earth Hour. Professor Svitlana Sovgira and graduate student Marina Kugay organized and held a master class in making paper lanterns which were then hung in the room of the main building of the University. The purpose of the event is advocacy of nature conservation and environmental education of students, saving energy, paper, water and environment.








The evening of March 29 the action held in the new building of the university attracted the staff and students of the Nature and Geography Department, teachers, parents and pupils of secondary school number 3 city of Uman. Associate Professor Igor Tkachenko also participated in the action. He suggested looking into the telescope and everyone was grateful to see the night sky. During the event, there was a concert for students and pupils. Lanterns were launched into the sky at the end of Earth Hour.

Earth Hour was started in Sydney (Australia) in 2007. A year later, this event has become a global environmental initiative; it united over 100 million people in 35 countries. In 2009, Ukraine joined 126 more countries to celebrate the worldwide Earth Hour. Last year, Earth Hour became an unprecedented success as the action was supported by 152 countries, 7000 cities 40 of which are located in Ukraine.
