Late May, the students of Ukrainian Philology Department at USPU marked the International Day of Philologist with "Street" ethnology holiday. The initiator of the event was the Chair of Ukrainian literature and Ukrainian language (the Head of the Chair - Natalia Syvachuk, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor).

"Street" is an ancient tradition of youth entertainment in Ukraine. The outdoor activities were held in spring and summer on Sundays and evenings after work. Rural young people gathered together for fun.

At first, the students demonstrated how in ancient times a place for "Street" was selected according to the certain customs: spinning a spindle in the place where they had assembled a merry company; cooked and buried a pot of porridge to gather the youth like grains of cereals; burned a corncrake and cast the ashes to attract the young people from far away. Girls and boys sang songs (which praised the girls and mocked at the boys), danced fiery dances, made quizzes, cracked jokes, told various news and legends. Besides entertainment, the youth had traditionally held their meetings on the "Street" to resolve the social issues. Iryna Bolshakova, the student Dean of the Ukrainian Philology Department noted the special events of the school year, and Valentyna Koval, the Dean, Professor handed diplomas and thanked to the best students.

The highlight of the celebration was the performance of "Kobzar" Ukrainian folk choir.

We hope that students will continue to search ethnological activities and continue to draw inspiration and strength from the life-giving source of folk art.
