Ukrainians are encouraged to put on Ukrainian national dress costumes on the Day of Ukrainian embroidery celebrated on May 16-17. For students and teachers of USPU Ukrainian embroidery has become a mandatory attribute of ceremonial dress. Holidays and important events promote the use of Ukrainian folk embroidery which is a reflection of pictorial, graphic and ornamental composite culture of the people. The University teaches us not only to wear embroidered clothes but also to create embroideries.


The Ukrainian Philology Department holds a master class in "Ukrainian towel" at the "Eastern Podillya embroidery study" scientific and methodical center, presented by Natalia Mamchur, a Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Ukrainian literature and Ukraine studies. The purpose of the master class is the implementation of a set of educational, training and research, scientific and methodological issues related to the Ukrainian cultural tradition of embroidery art.

The main activity of embroidery art of the students of Philology Department is collecting and revitalizing the old towels of the Eastern Podillya. The staff and students, members of the "Ethnology of Cherkasy Oblast" research laboratory collected more than three hundred of towels during the expeditions. When creating the towels the students learn the specifics of ornament feature semantics, colors, technologies, as the ornamental motifs of the Ukrainian towels are deeply rooted in the local flora and fauna, the historical traditions of our nation. For each towel they have created the electronic charts of ornaments which will eventually be placed in the album.

The main objectives of the "Ukrainian towel" master class are the following: implementation of search and research ideas; reproduction of old towels; improvement of technologies of embroidery stitches; research of ethno linguistic content of the Ukrainian towel; improvement of knowledge on the history of Eastern Podillya towels; familiarization with the experience of the masters of embroidery; organization of exhibition activity; tours and educational activities.

Thus, research and restoration of authentic samples of embroidery during the "Ukrainian towel" master class promotes shaping of the embroidery skills, developing aesthetic tastes of the philologists, expanding the students' ethnological outlook.

“Ukrainian towel” master class fully discloses the beauty of folk treasures, duly introduces Ukrainian folk embroidery to the younger generation and encourages to learn and aesthetically realize the customs, traditions, rituals, crafts and trades of our people.



It's nice to note that the participants of the "Ukrainian towel" master class in embroidery of Ukrainian Philology Department of the University are among the winners of the regional "Embroidered Uman" contest, dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the Cherkasy Oblast and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Taras Shevchenko. The hand created wonders of the students of Ukraine Study Department Tetiana Masnyuk, Natalia Zhyvko, Alla Snisarevska, Valentyna Semerenko, Iryna Kucheryava, Svitlana Tretiak, Alina Boreyko, Oksana Zavadska represent the vintage embroidery of the historical times of Uman. Among the participants of the contest there were the graduates of Ukrainian Philology Department - Inna Panchuk, Aliona Bohachyk, Oksana Koziy, that signifies the effectiveness of the master class of embroidery in the revival of folk art.

On the eve of Ukrainian embroidery day "Ethnology of Cherkasy Oblast" research laboratory and "Eastern Podillya embroidery study" scientific and methodical center at USPU held "Ukrainian embroidery. The regional dimension" round table the purpose of which was to explore the features of traditional embroidered shirt of the historical Uman. Among the guests there were Kateryna Krutskih, a writer, researcher of the folk traditions of Uman, Nina Povtorak, a professional embroiderer, member of "Katyusha" choir and ensemble of war veterans, Oleksandr Solop, the Director of "Uman" trade center. The round table discussed the relevant ethnology issues: study of local and regional traditions of Ukrainian embroidery, embroidered shirt meaning in the cultural heritage, Ukrainian embroidery in the context of literary works, reviving the folk and ethnographic memories of students about learning traditional embroidery of historical Uman, research of ethno linguistic content of embroidery in the professional formation of a future philologist.


Since the ancient times embroidery in Ukraine has been the main symbol, the talisman. Keeping this treasure at home we get the energy of our ancestors, we are proud of our past and happy to look into the future.
