March 21 is the World Forestry Day. This tradition was started in 1971 during the general meeting of the European Confederation of Agriculture the purpose of which was to discuss the importance of appreciation of the forest resources. So there was an idea of ??the declaration of World Forestry Day. It was immediately supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The European Confederation of Agriculture said that the World Forestry Day should be used to raise awareness about all aspects of forest wealth presented in the three perspectives: production, protection, and recovery.

On March 20 the staff of "Environment and Education" research laboratory at USPU organized and conducted "The future of the forests is in your hands" environmental action with teachers, 4 year students of the Nature and Geography Department and the staff of the Trade Union. The initiators of the action were Professor Svitlana Sovgira and graduate student Marina Kugay.

This conscious and inspired step of the university lecturers had a triple objective - scientific, educational, and pedagogical and was aimed at clarifying the importance of planting forests, the value of the forester profession for the community, bringing up a respect for nature in the young generations.

The objectives of the action are: development of environmental consciousness of the individuals, learning the advanced technology of growing the forest crops, planting material, laying out a new forest.

The event took place in Sobkivka forestry of Uman Forestry State Enterprise (in part 11, block 170, unit 10). About 1000 oak trees grown in the nursery of Sobkivka forestry were planted. They cover the area of 2.7 hectares. Sergiy Pidmohylnyak, the forestry expert and Anatoliy Gusak, the chief forester familiarized the students with the technology of planting seedlings.

Having done a bit of good work the students joined the celebration of the World Forestry Day celebrated on the day of the vernal equinox in the northern hemisphere which is traditionally considered the first day of spring and a symbol of new life and new beginnings. This period is favorable for planting and growth of trees.

The forests provide many invaluable treasures to the society. It's not only clean, fresh water, safe home for our flora and fauna, wood for our buildings, raw materials for paper, pollen and nectar for beekeeping, incredible amount of priceless archaeological, historical and cultural sites. This is life. So love the forest and celebrate this wonderful holiday with the forestry experts.
