Herbarium of Pavlo Tychyna Uman State Pedagogical University is part of a research unit of the Department of Biology and methods of teaching at the Nature and Geography Department. It has unique scientific and historical collections of regional and national importance, combining the functions of basic and applied research with immediate preservation of collections. Those collections contain the information on the taxonomic composition, history of development, transformation floras, phyto resources, geographical distribution, ecological and coenotic affinity of species that grow in our country. The collection covers primarily flora of the central Ukraine – the right bank of Cherkasy, Kiev Oblats, Vinnytsia, Kirovohrad, partly Odesa, Mykolaiv. The collections from Kharkiv, Poltava, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky, Kherson Oblasts, the Crimea, Mezhygirskiy district of Transcarpathian region and Turka district of Lviv are a bit fewer. The USPU Herbarium is a scientific basis for phyto biological research, development of scientific basis for the rational use of plant resources, health and environmental monitoring in the region.

The history of the herbarium dates back to 1930 when the Uman Institute of Social Education was created. 30 students were working there, many scientists were actively involved in the work.

In 1987 the Herbarium contained 3000 samples and it was headed by Semen Gedz, the Dean of the Department.

Maria Butylo, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, has made a great contribution into the exhibition of plants gathered in the valley of the Desenka River. She has gathered 1471 samples of plants.

Galyna Chorna, Candidate of Biological Sciences, actively participates in the work of the Herbarium. The USPU students have made a valuable contribution into that collection.

The activities of the Herbarium employees are aimed at expanding the collection of rare plants from the regions that have not been thoroughly researched yet. A special attention is given to the rare plants of Cherkasy Oblast and the neighboring Oblasts’ specialized herbariums of useful plants.

Now, the herbarium is a unique structure that collects the rare species of plants of Ukraine, fulfills the functions of the resource center. It is computerized, it has a catalogue of memorial value. Since 2013 the room is equipped with the freezers and the samples are protected against the insects.

Because of possibility of damage the herbal collections are always renewed and filled with fresh samples. Starting from the 90’s of the past century the herbarium collection is annually replenished by 1-2 thousands of samples. In the scientific laboratory of the botany department there are 1471 samples of 164 families of Magnoliophyta.

The herbarium employees are the University and Chair staff, graduate students. The herbarium funds are used during the classes and laboratory researches.
